Students' ethical approaches related to animal experiment: 9th grade example

Özet

Rapid changes on science and technology lead to the necessity of using living beings on science researches. Process of animal usage on experiments created also ethical controversies and through the aim of making literate learners, the necessity of dealing with these subjects on science teaching programs. During science education process, student points of view about the subject is very significant for determining the subject teaching methods. From this point, on this study, it is aimed to find out about the preferences and point of view of middle school 9th grade learners' ethical point of view about animal usage on experiments. Obesity illness, medicine usage for illness treatment, cancer treatment and occupational ethics, cosmetic industry, test process and product creating created the sub subjects of scenarios with dilemmas. Samples of the research are 431 9th grade students that are from Ankara. Answers for the provided scenarios analyzed with qualitative data analysis method, content analysis. According to created thematic codes, student point of views and preferences analyzed through their percentage and frequency values. According to the gathered findings, it is seen that approaches of students while making an ethical decision show difference in relation with sub subject headings.
