Treatment of subjective svmptoms in bullous keratopathy by phototherapeut ckeratectomy

Özet
Purpose. We tried to test the effect of deep excimer laser ablations on on to the subjective symptoms as pain and irritation in patients with bullous keratopathy. Methods: 11 patients with aphakic and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy were treated with 300 microns of ablation. Their score for pain and irritation were recorded for 6 months. After penetrating keratoplasty the ablated correas underwent histopathologic and electronmicroscopic evaluation.Controls ( n:10 ) were obtained from a similar group that had direct transplantation without excimer ablation.Results: In the group with läse? ablation subjective symptoms were significantly decreased after the laser theraphy comparing to preoperative scores(p< 0.001). Corneal thicmesses was 15.7 % lower than the preop values. TEM findings were significant with extreamly thick prestromal membrane formation without any nerve tissue invasion of the deep epithelial layers by the end cf six month . Conclusions: Excimer laser ablation can be an alternative to penetrating keratoplasty in patients with unilateral bullous keratopathy and painful eye with healty contralateral eyes for eliminating pain and irritation.
