In this paper, a new method based on quadrature amplitude modulation, which is developed to analyze harmonic spectrum of the voltage and current signals distorted due to nonlinear loads in the power system, is presented. The proposed method aims to reduce the spectral leakage, which occurs in case of oscillations of the fundamental frequency in the Fourier-analysis-based methods. Another aim of the proposed method is to increase the time-resolution of the spectral analysis, by employing shorter time windows compared to those of the Fourier Analysis. With the proposed quadrature amplitude modulation method, phase and amplitude values at any desired frequency can be obtained accurately using one-cycle windows of the fundamental frequency instead of ten-cycle windows recommended by the IEC 61000-4-7 Standard for Fourier analysis. The method has been tested both with synthetic data and field data and it has been shown that phase and amplitude information of the signal can be obtained more accurately than the Fourier analysis using one-cycle analysis windows.
