Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most important malignancies, increasing the burden of the disease with its advanced metastasis potential and poor prognosis. FAK and MMP-9 are proteins associated with many cancer pathologies, playing an active role in tumor proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. Increased expression of FAK and MMP-9 has been reported in many cancer types. Decreased expression of Caspase-3, a member of the family of cysteine-aspartic proteases, is associated with tumor formation, while its role in gastric cancer is controversial.

Aim: The aim of the study was to measure serum levels of FAK, MMP-9 and Caspase-3 and to investigate their possible associations with gastric cancer. Methods: In this study, all serum levels were measured by ELISA method using commercial kits in 50 gastric cancer patients and 50 healthy controls. Results: Serum FAK and MMP-9 levels were found to be significantly higher in gastric tumor patients compared to control groups, whereas there was no statistically significant difference in serum caspase-3 levels (p<0.01, p<0.01 and p>0.05, respectively).

Discussion and Conclusion: Increased tissue and/or serum/plasma levels of FAK and MMP have been reported in many studies, including gastric cancer. In our study, serum FAK and MMP-9 levels were significantly increased. Our results seem to support the tumor activity of increased serum FAK and MMP-9 levels in gastric cancer.
