A new bidesmosidic triterpenoidal saponin of hederagenin was isolated from the ethanolic extract of the roots of Symphytum officinale L. Its structure was elucidated by using H-1 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY NMR, heteronuclear H-1-C-13 correlated spectroscopy (heteroCOSY), C-13 NMR, DEFT, FAB mass spectrometry and chemical evidence as 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl]-hederagenin-28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] ester.
