Özet

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of an online educational intervention based on the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and supported by motivational interviewing (MI) on urinary incontinence (UI)-related quality of life and the frequency and severity of UI in women. DESIGN: Pretest-posttest randomized controlled trial. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The study was completed in Turkey and included 59 women with UI recruited from family health centers, 29 randomized to the intervention group and 30 to the control group. The data were collected between March 2021 and October 2021. METHODS: Women in the intervention group were given online training on UI. Five MI and 5 telephone interviews were conducted. Women in the control group received usual care. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF), Incontinence Severity Index (ISI), Incontinence Quality of Life Scale (I-QOL), and Evaluation Form for Stages of Change. Outcomes in the 2 groups were compared using independent groups t-tests for normally distributed data, and the Mann-Whitney U test when data were not normally distributed. RESULTS: After the intervention, quality-of-life (I-QOL) scores were significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group (P = .02, CI: [1.21-16.93]). There was a significant difference between the groups in stages of change (P < .001). There were no significant group differences in UI frequency (P = .39) or severity (P = .29). CONCLUSIONS: Nursing education based on the TTM supported by MI had a positive effect on women's quality of life and progression through the stages of change.
