Abstract

An experimental apparatus which can provide an accurate temperature control was constructed for directional solidification of aluminium alloys. A moving heat barrier, a chill heater and a cooling system was integrated to the system for temperature control purpose. Temperature map was achieved in order to calibrate the apparatus. The results of the temperature map showed that 2.5-4.8 degrees C/cm temperature gradients were obtained in the mold at various positions of the furnace.
