The article is devoted to the study of the artistic concept of KNIGHTHOOD/RITTERTUM as a representative of the discourse of the Middle Ages in medieval German prose of the twentieth century. The concept of KNIGHTHOOD was analyzed from the points of view of linguistics, cognitive linguistics, interpretation of concepts and their constituents in speech activities and made it possible to qualify as a complex polymodal unit of consciousness that accumulates human experience, is able to be embodied in the artistic language with the help of a variety of its means. The analysis of the concept was carried out on the basis of Lyon Feuchtwanger’s historical novel “The Spanish Ballad” or “(Jewish from Toledo)” (1955), dedicated to the events of the mature Middle Ages of the ХІ– ХІІІ centuries, which are marked by the rise of statehood, the spread of Christianity, the revitalization of written literature, the development of education, the role of knighthood. Based on the analysis of scientific works, it is established that by its nature the concept is a mental essence and correlates with knowledge that forms an idea of the world, influences historical and cultural factors that form the formula of medieval mentality in German artistic texts of the twentieth century. This concept is constructive and basic in determining the specifics of medieval discourse. The associative-value halo of the teleonomic concept of knighthood is such its descending taxa as honor (the fundamental principle of life, observance of the oath and the moral code of knighthood), nobility (embodied in moral qualities, behavior, appearance, clothing, weapons, speech of a knight), nobility (capable, noble, aristocratic, chivalrous), piety (loyalty to the church and God, protection of Christianity). The linguopoietic approach to the study of textual matter of the conceptualization of KNIGHTHOOD allows us to establish the features of understanding medieval culture, to get ideas about the causes that influenced the emergence and formation of a religious moral and ethical imperative, the linguistic objectification of which in the texts of medieval prose has universal, national-specific and author-individual features.
