Economic development and population growth have led to large amounts of generation of kitchen waste, which has complex compositions and can negatively affect environment and social harmony when not properly disposed of. However, the appropriate treatment of kitchen waste can promote the development of the waste-to-energy and resource recycling, and there are many technologies that can be utilized to treat kitchen waste. Therefore, by considering the energy and resources conversion of kitchen waste, a multi-objective mixed integer optimization model, which with the objectives of maximum net energy output and minimum total costs is developed. Then the proposed optimization model is applied to a real case to determine its practicality. The effects of different water proportions of kitchen waste and carbon emission reduction attitudes towards the system on the calculation results are analyzed and discussed. Finally, based on the results, some useful suggestions for kitchen waste management are presented. The results of this paper demonstrate that the proposed optimization model can determine the appropriate kitchen waste treatment strategies and technology applications.
