In chemistry classes, two of the first things students typically learn are the names and symbols for the chemical elements. Oral recitation is one strategy commonly used to teach this information, but games can make the learning process more enjoyable for students. A game is described that can help students learn the name and symbol of elements, periodic trends, and to identify groups and periods in the periodic table in a fun environment. This game, Chem Poker, is adapted from the card game poker. Chem Poker is played with a set of 52 cards that should be prepared by the teacher or students.
