General situation of course materials in Turkey and a model application

Abstract:

In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the efforts to OpenCourseWare initiative at universities in Turkey and to reveal the lack of OpenCourseWare and aspects need to be completed by examining the work done in this regard. It is discussed that seven universities including Ankara, Gazi, Istanbul Technical, Hacettepe and Middle East Technical that allows to reach OpenCourseWare. Study investigation was made related to specified criteria for courses at the seven universities in light of numerical data. According to the results of research, it was determined that OpenCourseWare initiatives in Turkey were not sufficient and yet only seven universities offered OpenCourseWare opportunity. It was determined that OpenCourseWare in the web page were examined at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level and no universities have the course content at the doctoral level. It is seen that the most of the course content is in the field of Science, the least of the course content is in the field of Health Sciences. When analyzed in terms of the course materials, it is observed that pdf materials are preferred rather than textual, audio and visual practical materials. Considering all these factors, it was determined that there is a lack of teaching materials for OpenCourseWare, course materials are presented in uniform but there is no standard at the interface that used presenting course materials. It was determined that some learners to access OpenCourseWare must be a student of the university concerned. As a result, it was developed solutions common denominator to eliminate these shortcomings and a sample OpenCourseWare model. Examining the website designs and interfaces of universities offering OpenCourseWare, it is determined that websites need to be have the properties for this subject.
