Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of sexual intercourse on controlled ovarian hyperstimlation (COH)+intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle success in patients with unexplained infertility. 297 patients with unexplained infertility satisfying inclusion criteria were included in the study. All patients underwent COH/IUI using gonadotropin. Group 1 consisted of 171 patients who were recommended sexual intercourse immediately after IUI whereas 126 patients comprising group 2 were recommended coitus 72 hours after the procedure. Rates of pregnancy (13.5% vs 11.9%), clinical pregnancy (11.7% vs 8.7%), live birth (9.4% vs 6.3%) were compared. These rates were higher in group 1; however, this difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Rates of abortus were similar in two groups (2.3% and 2.4% respectively) and was not significantly different (p>0.05). The results of our study show that sexual intercourse does not have a meaningful impact on rates of pregnancy after COH+IUI cycles in patients with unexplained infertility. Studies with larger number of patients and differrent infertil groups are required to evaluate the effect of sexual intercourse more conclusively.
