Abstract:

Forensic sciences, in short, is the application of science branches to law. Crime scene is one of the sub-branches of forensic sciences. The examination of the crime scene is the most basic stage of the investigation. Even if the latest technology is used in criminal laboratories, it does not contribute to the solution of the case unless the crime scene is carefully examined and carefully documented. There are four traditional techniques for crime scene documentation that have been approved and are currently used by all forensic scientists. These are; sketching, photography, videography and note taking. With the development of technology, it has been observed that traditional documentation methods may be insufficient. Three-dimensional imaging of crime scenes is a great revolution for those in charge of the investigation and prosecution stages. Photogrammetry, total stations and three-dimensional laser scanning devices are widely used in three-dimensional imaging and reconstruction of crime scenes. Forensic science is a multidisciplinary science. Three-dimensional scanning and processing of crime scenes increases the importance of forensic informatics. It is clear that forensic informatics will be an important branch of science in photographing and three dimensional scanning and processing of crime scenes, regardless of what the crime subject is. In this study, six different crime scenes staged using a laser scanning device were animated in three dimensions. In the staged crime scenes with different findings, scanning operations were performed as it can be used in real crime scene investigation. The scanning images were processed in two different stages and it was interpreted whether the processed images could be used in a real investigation and prosecution file. With the development of technology, efforts are being made to adapt different technologies to the documentation and examination of crime scenes. A picture is more understandable and explanatory than a thousand pages of text, but with this study, it has been understood that different studies should be carried out for the use of laser scanning device at crime scenes and technologies in this field should be further developed.
