Abstract:Osteoporosis is a systemic and metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density and microstructural deterioration in the skeletal system. Osteoporosis is seen as an important health problem which affects 55% of patients over 50 years of age and 80% of this population is women. Osteoporosis increases the risk of bone fracture after minimal traumas and causes inadequate bone healing in tumor, trauma and other bone disorders. Jaw bones are frequently affected by this situation, difficulties are experienced in recovery and rehabilitation of deficiencies after tooth extraction, therefore, patients' nutrition and quality of life are negatively affected. The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of astaxanthin, known as powerful antioxidant, on bone healing. For this purpose, 60 Wistar Albino female rats were used in the study. Mandibular defects were created in rats with or without osteoporosis model in different groups. While no experimental drug was applied to the control groups, two different doses of astaxanthin 5mg/kg/day, 25mg/kg/day and 10mg/kg/day raloxifene as a reference material were applied to the experimental groups for 4 weeks. At the end of this period, rats were sacrificed by cardiac puncture then biochemical and histopathological examination was performed. In the biochemical tests, serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin values were examined. Bone turnover increased in favor of destruction in rats with osteoporosis model, decreased in treatment groups, statistically significant differences were found in raloxifene and 25mg/mg astaxanthin groups. New bone and connective tissue formation rates were evaluated with histopathological evaluation. Compared to the control groups, in both osteoporosis model groups and healthy groups, astaxanthin and raloxifene application increased new bone and connective tissue formation rates and these increases made a statistically significant difference in raloxifene and 25mg/kg astaxanthin groups.
