Abstract:

The concept of “place” constitutes the data that shapes architecture and forms the basis of design. A review of the history reveals that buildings that are designed specifically for their place possess an inherent quality. On the other hand, industrialization, industrial development, mechanization, urbanization, and the change of ideologies that started in the 20th century brought universal, rational and standard concerns to the fore. Migration to the developing cities and the increasing population resulted in a demand for housing. In order to respond to the increasing demand in a short span of time, typical, place-independent housing designs were introduced, however these designs were insufficient in meeting the needs and requirements of the users. Although attempts were made to return to indigenous desings for residential buildings that were affected by change and transformation, these designs could not reach beyond imitating the past and being incorporated into the new. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to examine the concept of being place-specific, to determine place-specific data through place-specific approaches in housing designs, and to analyze case studies sited in a place that has preserved its original texture through these data. For this purpose, the place-specific traditional houses of the Yahşibey village of İzmir province Dikili district, which have preserved their identity were examined. In the light of data and parameters gathered, new housing examples built after 2000, Emre Senan, Ekin Senan, Nevzat Sayın, Kerime Arsan, Bihrat Mavitan and Alev Mavitan house, were evaluated and old and new houses were compared. The data obtained are respectively; under natural and socio-cultural main headings; and topography, climate, environmental image, society and family structure, place-specific architectural language sub-headings. As a result of the analyses, it has been understood that every place should be studied in its own context, and rather than following certain pre-established rules, place-specific designs should be designed in a flexible, reconciling dialogue between the old and the new, and with an attitude that unites the established and temporary elements.
