A Survey and Analysis of the Piano Albums Prepared for Children and Young People

Abstract:

This study was constituted on the purpose of creating an inventory by scanning the piano albums prepared for children and young people from Baroque Era to the end of the 20th century and introducing general characteristics of these albums to be used in the piano training. In accordance with this purpose, the problem statement of the research has been defined as "which composers' piano albums composed in the classical western music style were available for children and young people and what were their characteristics in general sense?" and according to this problem statement, answers were sought for four subproblems. The universe of this research was the piano albums prepared for children and young people in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and the 20th century periods. The entire piano album repertoire prepared for children and young people, from Baroque Era to the end of the 20th century, was tried to be reached by scanning resources related to the solution of the problem. Based on the inventory and analysis study to be created in this study, the general scanning model was used and albums that existed were revealed through bookstores, private collections, libraries and online catalog scans. As a result of the literature review, 160 piano albums prepared for children or young people by 102 composers in total were identified. From those 43 albums prepared by 78 composers have been constituted the sample of this research; the number of works in it, the tone of the works, the compositional techniques, the basic musical characteristics and pianistic aspects were examined within the framework of this research and the works selected from the albums were generally analyzed on the same articles for ease of use in the piano training. It viii is thought that the piano albums obtained will bring a new breath to the piano training and will provide benefit to the piano teachers who are looking for a useful resource that can be used in the piano training
