Abstract:
The city of Side, located in Manavgat district in Antalya, has had a multi layered historical texture from the ancient times until today since societies preferred the city to live and civilizations were established in the same place. Cretans who settled in the region during the Ottoman period, established the village of Selimiye and formed the last layer of the city. At the end of the 1960s, the ancient city of Side was opened to mass tourism due to its natural, historical and cultural richness. However, tourism has developed uncontrolling and cultural heritage - modern life have intertwined, which caused problems. The thesis aims specifically looking into urban and III. degree archaeological site in the ancient city of Side. The aim of the research is to determine the problems that emerged because the city of Side meets tourism and the effects of conservation plans which developed for these problems. When determining the problems, by collecting information about the history of the city with literature research, the documentation and conservation studies carried out from the discovery process of the city to the present were examined. By evaluating the obtained data in the field research, the change of the city after tourism and positive or negative effects of conservation planning on the historical environment were investigated. As a result of study, it was determined that the ancient city of Side has suffered serious deterioration due to the failure of the historical site requirements and conservation plannings have not been carried out correctly. Due to increasing tourism rent in the city, illegal constructions have increased and therefore the cultural heritage of the city has remained in the background. Giving priority to tourism in the ancient city of Side and carrying out the conservation work after the tourism decisions have caused insufficient protection and damaged the unique traditional identity of the city. The study provides the basis for conservation works that can be developed for the ancient city of Side as well as what precautions should be taken for the problems that may arise with the coexistence of the ancient city and modern life.
