Abstract:

One of the biggest opportunities to pass Turkey’s biological richness to next generations is education in schools. In this research examining the 7th grade students’ awareness about extinct and endangered organisms and solution offers for the problems, case study pattern from qualitative research methods is used. Semi-structured interview forms, prepared in line with the experts’ opinions, filled in by 285 students and descriptive analysis method was used to analyse the data. At the end of the research, the followings were observed: the students have insufficient information about endangered and extinct organisms, they could not give an example except for dinosaur, only one student gave an example of an extinct plant, their solution offers were limited and 75% of their sources of information about the issue were other than school. As a result, it is concluded that it is important to make arrangements in the teaching programs that students can learn by internalizing these subjects and increase their sensitivity. It is considered that characters in virtual platforms and films are highly catchy so to attract the students’ attentions to this subject, such characters and platforms should be used more.
