Abstract:

This study was conducted to examine the attitudes of gifted students and students with

normal development towards physical education and sports lessons. In this research, t search

model was used. The population of the research was composed of 985 gifted students who

received education in 5 Science and Art Centers (BİLSEM) in the central districts of Ankara

province and a total of 5339 normal development students between studying 10 state schools

selected by random method in these districts in 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the

study consisted of 394 volunteer students with 141 gifted students who were educated in

BİLSEMs and 253 students with normal development educated in public schools. The

Personal Information Form, which was prepared by the researcher as a data collection tool

and used to determine the demographic information of the participants and the "Physical

Education Course Attitude Scale" composed of two factors as cognitive and affective

including 16 items which were adapted to Turkish by Kalemoğlu Varol, Ünlü, Erbaş and

Sünbül (2016) determined in accordance with the object of the research were used.

Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z test was used to test the normality assumptions regarding the

distribution of data collected from gifted students and students with normal development. In

this context, nonparametric statistical techniques have been used in the comparisons since

they do not provide the assumption of normality. Mann-Whitney U Test analysis was used

to determine the difference between the scores of the general and sub-factors of the attitude

scale according to the variables which are two groups within the demographic characteristics

of the students. The difference between the scores obtained from the general and sub-factors

of the attitude scale according to the variables which are more than two groups within the

ix

demographic characteristics of the students was examined by the Kruskal-Wallis H test. At

the same time, if there was a significant difference in Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney

U test was used to determine the difference between the groups. According to the results of

the research, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between

cognitive attitudes and general attitudes of gifted students and students with normal

development towards physical education and sports lesson, and there was no significant

difference between affective attitudes. It was concluded that the cognitive and general

attitude scores of gifted students were lower than the cognitive and general attitude scores of

normally developing students.
