Abstract:
The expectation of the citizens from those who govern the city is primarily to meet the basic needs. Then, comes the demands over the spatial quality of life. However, our life experience shows that urban interventions do not always produce positive effects on the quality of life of citizens. Further to this, some interventions are proven to decrease the quality of life of inhabitants. Based on this assumption, the thesis aims to answer the question 'What is the effect of urban spatial interventions on the quality of life of urban residents?'. The research is realised on two dimensions one being the theoretical while the other is practical. Theoretically, the research is based on the discussions evolved around urban spatial interventions and urban quality of life being two of the most important aspects of the urbanisation process. Çankaya district of Ankara Province is selected to evaluate theoretical discussion concerning a practical ground. To understand the effect of interventions produced by different actors on the quality of life; plans, plan alterations, and projects are analysed with reference to differential scales within Çankaya District. To verify the preliminary findings and contribute to further discussions semi-structured interviews are realised with people who contribute to decision-making processes and plan-making. Further to this, the petition and demands of inhabitants living in Çankaya District are taken into consideration. In the end, findings focusing on Çankaya district have been evaluated based on qualitative and quantitative methods and suggestions have been developed to produce effective and successful policies for improving the urban quality of life of citizens.
