Abstract:

This research,by using model eliciting activities aims to examine the effects of decimal representation teaching on 6 th grade students’ academic success and attitudes towards their math and detect students’ thoughts about activities. This research, in which both quantitative and qualitative data is examined was conducted in 2018-2019 educational year in a public school of Sincan district with 71 students. Experimental group consists of 36 students while control group has 35. Semi-experimental research design which includes pre-test and post-test control groups were also used in the study. During this four-week study while activities which take part in curriculum were conducted on control group, as forexperimental groups model elicitng activities were used in after related courses were taught. During the course of data Decimal Presentation Achievement Test, Mathematics Attitude Scale Test and interviews held at the end of activities were used. The resulting data analyzed with help of statistical analysis programs. While t-test was used to analyze quantitative data, content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The findings of the research in regard to academic success and attitudes towards mathematics shows that teaching process carried out by modelling activities created a statistically significant difference in comparison with traditional teaching process. It has been also detected that students had some difficulties in the process of model eliciting activities. But in this period by practicing model eliciting activities regarding to same topic it has been seen that these difficulties lessened and students started to show more willingness for taking part in activities. In interviews students ix expressed that model eliciting activities are difficult, effortful, time consuming; on the other hand enjoyable, entertainig, and depending on daily life
