Abstract:
In this study, a valid and safe scale was created to determine the degree of nature deficit of secondary school students. The scale, called the Nature Deficit Scale, consists of subscales for behavior and thoughts. Moreover, the developed scale was applied in Nevşehir province and the findings were presented. The scale developed during the research consists of behavior and thought subscales with 27 items each. The number of items in the scale is 54. During the development of the scale, it was studied with 409 students attending the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades in Nevşehir in the 2020-2021 academic year. The data obtained during the creation of the scale were analyzed using the SPSS program. In the validity phase, content, face, and construct validity were examined. In the reliability phase, the internal consistency coefficient was investigated. The scale was finalized as a result of exploratory factor analysis. The internal consistency coefficient Cronbach's alpha for the total scale was determined to be 0,94. The internal consistency coefficient of Cronbach's alpha was determined to be 0,86 for the behavior subscale and 0,95 for the thinking subscale. After the scale was ready, its first application was carried out on 1370 students studying in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades in the 2020-2021 academic year in Nevşehir city center. Non-parametric tests in SPSS package program were used in the analysis of the application results. Since the data did not have normal distribution, Kruskal Wallis H and Mann Whitney U tests were applied. As a result of the application, arithmetic mean, degrees of freedom and frequency tables were used to analyze the data. The results of the scale and the students' personal statements were compared. The girls' nature deficit was lower than that of the boys. For the most part, there was no significant difference between school types. When compared by grade level, the nature deficit was found to decrease as the students' grade level increased. While there are statistically significant differences according to the age of the students, the educational level of the father, the educational level of the mother, the income level of the family, and the number of people in the family do not seem to be the factors that influence nature deficit. Watching documentaries has a very large influence on nature deficit. The place where students live also has an influence on nature deficit. The nature deficit of the students who participated in nature education is lower. Finally, with the time spent in front of the screen, the students' nature deficit also increases.
