Abstract:

The aim of this study is to determine the rate of historical literacy of the 7th grade students and the influence of different in-class historical novel reading techniques on the degree of these students? historical literacy. This study also aims to identify the views of the teachers about students? historical literacy and the views of the students about the process. During the research mixed research model including both quantitative and qualitative research technique is used. In the quantitative part of the research in which descriptive survey model is used, 717 seventh grade students from 9 different secondary schools comprise the group. The quantitative dimension of the study consisted of 2x2 pre-test post-test control group design. Personal reading technique, computer-aided reading technique and group reading techniques are respectively applied to the experimental groups 1, 2 and 3 while the unit of Türk Tarihinde Yolculuk was the subject. On the other hand the same unit was studied according to the approach of the curriculum. In this study ?historical literacy attitude scale? and ?historical literacy knowledge-skill test? developed by the researcher is used as the data collection tool. The data collected from the research is analyzed with SPSS 17.0 statistical package program. As a result of the descriptive survey it is understood that the history literacy of the students is generally under average level. According to the experimental data it is determined that personal reading technique is effective over the skills of understanding the historical language and binding the past and the present; the computer aided technique is effective over the skills of chronological reading, historical empathy, and using information and communication technology; and the group reading technique is effective over the skills of finding cause and effect relationship, and discerning the difference between narrative statement and controversial statement. In the qualitative part of the research primarily the ?Student Interview Form? to determine the views of the students and the ?Teacher Interview Form? in which the views and advices of the teachers about the low historical literacy of the students are received, are used. When the data is analyzed it is recognized that the students develop positive views (such as increasing their interest in history and the course, developing their readings, learning history in details) about studying the course with historical novels. When the data collected from the teachers about the lowness of historical literacy of the students is analyzed, it is observed that some reasons like the lack of awareness of the teachers and the parents in guiding the students, the neglect of the students? skills and overemphasis on information and the inability of the course books to reflect the structuralist approach are fore grounded. As a result of the research some suggestions about further scientific research about the development of the degree of historical literacy and the in-class use of historical novels are presented.
