Abstract:
The aim of this research is to observe the impact of Realistic Mathematics Education approach on academic success of students while teaching algebra at 6th grade classes. Pre-test post-test experimental and control group quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The research was carried out with 44 sixth grade students, 20 of whom were experimental and 24 of them were control group in the second term of 2018-2019 academic year in two state secondary schools in İznik district of Bursa province. The sample of the study was formed by using cluster random sampling method. In the experimental group in the field of 'Algebra' learning, the lessons are presented with the Realistic Mathematics Education approach; In the control group, it was carried out with the current teaching method included in the Elementary Mathematics Course Curriculum of the Ministry of National Education (MONE). The application continued for two weeks. In the study, 13 questions were tested for validity and reliability. Pre-test, post-test post-test and retention test were applied to the experimental and control groups five months after the last test. The data obtained were analyzed by t-test for dependent and independent groups in SPSS program because of normal distribution. It was observed that there was no significant difference in the achievement levels of algebra according to the t-test of independent groups which were made by using pre-test scores of the experimental and control groups before the application. The independent groups t-test was used to determine whether there was a significant difference between the successes of the experimental and control groups towards the concept of algebra according to the scores obtained from the last test after the application. In the study, it was seen that the Realistic Mathematics

Education teaching method applied to the experimental group increased the success of the students and had a positive effect on the permanence in the teaching of algebra unit gains. According to the findings obtained from the research, it is seen that the course which is taught according to Realistic Mathematics Education method is statistically significantly effective than the current teaching method. Regard to this result, it is recommended to use activities appropriate to Realistic Mathematics Education in mathematics courses in accordance with the grade level and subject.
