Abstract:

Military band conductor education in Turkey is given with a 4-year undergraduate program offered in Hacettepe University, Ankara State Conservatory, Band Conducting Art Branch in the Composition and Orchestral Conducting Major Art Branch, and the student source of the program is the National Defence University, Band NCO Vocational HE School that trains band musicians at associate degree level. However, the recent changes in the education system of the said military music education institution, the insufficient quality of the student resource whose structure has changed, the failure of the academic education process being planned according to the needs, the inadequacy of the current system in preparing the military band conductors for their professional life and the absence of an in-service training system for the professional development of military band conductors, bring the need to evaluate the training in this field and to restructure it. From this point of view; with this research, it is aimed to develop a model that is based on a qualified student resource on the process of training and development of military band conductors in Turkey which includes in-service training process to ensure the development of military band conductors throughout their professional lives after the academic education process. The pattern of the research, on one hand, is based on a descriptive study based on field research, and on the other hand, it is based on the action research model by way of creating an exemplary design for the military band conductor training and development process. In this context, planning was made in accordance with the action research process by following the stages of problem determination, data collection, data analysis, determining an action plan, performing the action and deciding on an alternative or new action; after identifying the problem, the action research process stages were associated with sub-problems. In the research, in which literature review and interview methods, which are among the qualitative data collection methods, were used, the military band conductors interviewed were selected by the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods. In the interviews with the military band conductors, an interview form prepared with a standardized open-ended interview approach was used. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using the content analysis technique. In the research; re-determining the level of competence and readiness that should be obtained before academic education; determining the student resource and enrollment-admission conditions in line with the determined proficiency and readiness level; re-planning the courses in the program to meet the professional needs of a military band conductor by considering the academic education process as a whole; regarding the vocational training process, it has emerged that arrangements should be made to ensure continuity in the professional development of military band conductors. Therefore, in the light of the findings obtained, the problem areas were identified in the current practice for the military band conductor training process in Turkey and the factors causing it were determined, and a model that allows the mentioned process to be organized in a systematic and purposeful way was tried to be designed. The model, designed as a comprehensive process and consists of 4 stages, namely "Pre-Academic Education Qualification Level", "Identification of Student Source", "Management of the Academic Education Process" and "Management of the In-Service Training and Vocational Evaluation Process", has been submitted to expert opinion for examination. The data obtained from the interviews were evaluated by content analysis and the model proposal was given its final shape. As a result of the research; regarding the applicability of the emerging model, positive opinions were expressed by the experts and it was stated that this study, which is an idealized doctrine, will make important contributions to the field in terms of training the military band conductors in Turkey and ensuring continuity in their professional development.
